Uranium, a raw material extracted from mines, cannot be used as is. To become a usable nuclear fuel in power plants, it must be transformed. The Orano Malvési plant receives uranium ore concentrates for chemical purification and the first stage of conversion.

The Orano Malvési plant in the Aude region of France is in charge of the first conversion phase, which consists of purifying natural uranium ore from mines into uranium tetrafluoride (UF4). The degree of purification of the Orano process at Malvési is such that it can treat any type of uranium ore, whatever its origin.. The second stage, to complete its transformation into uranium hexafluoride (UF6), is carried out at the Orano Tricastin site in the Drôme region.
